Sary-Chelek Lake is located in the western part of Kyrgyzstan, among the faults of the mountain spur of the Chatkal range at an altitude of 1,904 meters above sea level. It is called one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Central Asia for its unique color of water and pristine nature.
Because of its tectonic origin, Sary-Chelek has steep rocky shores and a maximum depth of 234 meters. Due to its location among mountains the water temperature does not exceed 12 degrees Celsius in summer and 4 degrees Celsius in winter. According to one legend, the lake Sary-Chelek appeared because St. Torskool with his huge staff collapsed the mountains in a forest gorge, and the lake was formed on the site of the blockage. It is believed that on the shore of Sary-Chelek is the tomb of the saint, to which many pilgrims come to worship. Two mosques were built in this place and there is a water spring.
The main wealth of Sary-Chelek are nut and fruit forests, located in its southern part. The animal and plant life is very diverse, there are species that are found only in Kyrgyzstan. The lake water contains calcium and magnesium salts. The ice cover on the territory of Sary-Chelek begins to descend in April.
Fans of fishing can devote themselves to their favorite pastime in the waters of the lake itself, but not in the rivers that feed it, where fishing is prohibited. It is recommended to visit these places during the period from June to September. Sary-Chelek is one of the most difficult and attractive sites for tourism.
